:(
They were my first MP3 Player because, well, there were no other players around before them. They released the first MP3 player, the most successful flash-based MP3 player (and before the iPod, the most successful MP3 Player), the powerhouse Karma, and ended with the Carbon line; a player which, many people in the DAP community, is the most superior 5GB sized player.
I was holding out for their newest player, but it will never come. The audiophile community looking for its next player truly weeps.

Yeah, I just saw this in DAPreview. I've never had a Rio but I've always thought they were great mp3 players. It's sortof sad..plus stuff they were working on is now dead and is never going to be released as anything :(.

Surprising, as long as they're been around. I often wondered when some consolidation is coming in this industry. When you read DAPreview it seems like they release a new player every day in Korea/Japan! I guess it's pretty easy to put one together, just buy a bunch of parts and have some geeks work on it, but the distribution and marketing and service aspect can't be that easy to implement.
Yea its sad to see Rio go... I remember when I saw those players as well as the RCA Lyra's side by side on the store shelves, I thought wow those look cool....
Eventhough I wasn't into Rio as much as some of you have been, its still sad to see one of the first MP3 player companies go under... Well not really go under, just stop making them.

Rio, RCA, and Creative... those were the three big ones. Creative is still doing well, but what happened to RCA? They seemed to be the least successful.

.....wow. Sad day for us in the gadget community. I remember that the first DAP I ever saw was a Rio...iPod has just taken over the world...and no one else can really compete. I'd even doubt a Gen III DJ.

I have two Rio S30S units...they are useful because they are small and seem to only be limited to expansion by the very size of SD media. They use AAA batteries, which was okay for me. However, I wasn't a big fan of the special USB adapter cord, or the fact that files were somehow converted into a "Rio" format on the player instead of being something you could just copy over on your own to an SD card.
In the Pocket PC world, we've seen quite a few manufacturers drop off the market in the past year, and I would expect the same in the DAP world. It's modern day Darwinism...but different in that it is affected by popularity more than function.
Remember the Beta video tape? Nearly everyone says that Beta was superior to VHS...so Beta went the way of the dinosaur, and you can still find the occasional VHS player or tape.
So, Rio, thanks for the memories. You were grand. You will be missed...but you will be replaced (or you already have).
I know that you can still buy an RCA Lyra from some stores, perhaps its old stock or something, but they still sell them.....
