Toshiba has finished a concept mp3 player that is powerd by small amounts of gas. Interesting idea, I guess?? Only problem is that the players are huge with not a lot of memory.Link (http://www.dapreview.net/comment.php?comment.news.2186)

can you say "worthless piece of shit"?? that is the stupidest waste of research money I have ever heard. Why would you wnat a huge player, with a small amount of memory, that runs off of an expensive and enviromentally destructive material....

How awesomely stupid!!!!!!!
Hold up, I've seen the specs for the Toshiba players, and they're not anywhere near huge. The largest one of the two models was slightly larger than a 60 GB iPod. And the heaviest of the two is about 10 ounces. I mean, really...do you guys have tiny hands or something?
And they're flash players, so obviously they won't have that much space yet. And on top of that they're also prototypes, so there will be improvements made. I mean, really, 60 hours off a 10 mL shot of methanol?
This could be an amazing breakthrough if done correctly. Imagine they case the cell in a battery like form. There you go, your own methanol fueled battery. No more having to worry about carrying batteries or an adaptor with you everywhere.
Also, methanol is often made from wood and other agricultural byproducts, too. It's just wood alcohol.
I'm not gonna argue that it's not toxic, but still, something like this could lead to more breakthroughs. I mean, what about an ethanol fuel cell? Or something else less toxic? I mean, something that'll give me that much more juice out of my system is more than welcome.
But yeah, I think you guys don't see the potentials that these liquid fuel cells could open up.

With gas so expensive these days, why would you want a gas powered MP3 player? Don't forget about the hazards of carrying gas with you.
It's not the same though. It's a liquid fuel cell powered player. Using a 30/70 dilution of methanol. Which is wood alcohol, which can be produced from organic biomass. And with the battery life being around 30 to 60 hours, you probably wouldn't need to carry any of the ethanol on your body.
Think of it like carrying a lighter, almost. It should be nearly as safe, I mean, they haven't spent years researching it for nothing. The only bad thing is that methanol is toxic. So, yeah, that's an issue, and a major one.

that fisrt paragraph made just as much sense to me as nuclear physics does...

Mitch that pic in your sig is awesome.

lol...thanks...i found it online a long time ago and i dont rememebr where....i have one where a guy shoots himself after openign a door too...(you dont actually see anythign graphic, he just falls over, like my sig)
Well, methanol is toxic, so that's sucky. But it's diluted methanol, 30 parts methanol to 70 parts water, which is a bit concentrated. It's flammable yes, but only if you purposely try to set it on fire. Kinda like with cigarette lighters, they're filled with butane and whatnot. They could explode too, but only if you really try to or are really unlucky. And since methanol is basically wood alcohol, you could use wood and other agricultural products to produce methanol as well. So, while I'm not sure on how much it costs to do that and everything, I think it wouldn't be too much.
I'm not much of a chemistry major though, so if anyone could clarify or correct me on anything please do. It's been a while. =x

I've always wanted a toxic fuel powered mp3 player!!
I'm glad you're adding so much to this thread. It's not quite as cut and dried as that, but if you wanna believe it, then sure.

OK, We'll start working on a low radation version. Everytime you listen to it, a small amount of radation will emit out of the headphones.

There's only one way they will be able to sell this thing: If they can include an attachment that will allow you to fart into it and recharge it with your own methane gas it will sell. Can you imagine the thing at a tailgate party? "Dude, get over here quick an recharge this thing...you ate the chili didn't you?

Yeah, I know.....I'm glad you explained it a bit more, when he said "gas powered" I was expecting it to be something that you would pull a cord and it would start up (like a lawnmower).
But otherwise, your right, I've contributed slim to none to this thread. Of course, my custom title explains why ;).
I'm not even sure how to read into that. But...we're still friends, right?

YEAH MAAAAAAAAN!!!!
Still, I don't like the idea that an mp3 player could kill me...

Well assuming you held this in your hand or in your pocket an explosion would most likely not kill you. Plus, when it does explode you can get 1 million dollars from the company ^^;
Don't think of it as an mp3 player, think of it as a lottery ticket that plays music.

Nah, see, the thing about these fuel cells is that they're made to be more safe than regular batteries. So, the chance of it killing you is not that high.
