Interesting read, seems that apple half-assed on the durability of the player.

Uh oh!!!!
I did read that the cover protecting the lcd was way too thin, and that you could actually touch the lcd with your finger...
I still maintain that I could snap it with 3 fingers.

It's too thin and that's why their is the Nano Invisible Screen to protect it.

I guess a case is mandatory to have with the nano, other wise you'll end up having a nice pretty thin paper wieght. I can't deal with an mp3 player I have to baby, I want to throw it in my pocket and go.

I think we all knew some kind of complication like that would be comming... either the screen, or the back caving in and snapping internal parts, or the sides splitting... something.
Well if its thin like a pencil, it can certianly break like a pencil.....

Of course it's too thin. I like having a thin mp3 player, but it doesn't have to be THAT thin. When you push on your DJ's screen, you have to put some serious force to touch the actual LCD. With this thing a little pressure is putting a lot of pressure on the LCD, and remember it's a color LCD, so it's not good to just be putting pressure on it. And the screens already a scratch magnet.

Yikes. I want to see how far these problems go because this is at least as bad of an issue as the old battery one. Apple was right though, the nano is indeed "impossibly small". It's impossibly small to be used regularly :/

I knew something like this would happen.

People experienced with mp3 players like many on this forum realize that this thing is just a monster scrath magnet. But of course, this thing will still sell like crazy during Xmas 05. And when every body has a scratched up Nano that looks like it's been used for years, what will happen next?

They will buy another, that's what'll happen.

It's genius get everyone to hype it up and then when theirs gets scratched, inevitably, force them to buy another one and shift the blame BACK TO THE USER for putting it in their pocket like Steve Jobs instead of in a vacuum sealed bubble with 6" thick polycarbonate walls.

Yeah, even the regular iPod scratches like crazy because they have to have a shiny back and gloss everything over like 30 or 40 times.
Apple says that this problem affects one tenth of 1% of the total number of Nano's sold worldwide. But they admitted that the problem exists....

I highly doubt that that's the figure....it has to be more than that.

It's gonna be the black one that scratches. Somebody already makes a pre cut static clear cover thingy for it. That's probably the way to go-still looks good, cant' scratch it, disposable. I remember some guy make one for the DJ's faceplate with cutouts for the buttons. He gave 'em away here, but I don't think the DJ really needs one.

Maybe Apple should come out with a case to protect the Nano

Well, at least they're offering a free replacement. But they also say that it's not a design flaw. How could it not be? It's too thin to have adequate protection against its contents.

Oh the bad news just keeps coming.

Well, according to Apple, it's a problem for less than a percent of the nanos shipped. If it was a design flaw, I'd expect that number to be much higher.

When I say it's a design flaw I don't mean it in the sense that there is a problem in the quality of the manufacturing, like how firestone tires used to explode. I mean that in order to get the ipod that small and that thin, you're going to have problems protecting the contents of the player, and you won't have the same type of protection that you're used to in the larger versions. It isn't a flaw that affects only a portion of the nanos, it's a problem with all of them, but only a few so far have had these problems exploited.
At least, that's what I think.

As much use and abuse as I put a portable MP3 player through, that is unacceptable to me. My first unit was an old audiovox I used when I worked in a lumber yard during college. It took a pretty good beating as I bumped into things, dropped it. My second unit (RCA Lyra) had it's belt clip zip tied to my bicycles handlebars. It took a few good dive bombs and slides and lived to show it's scars. I don't plan on doing that with my DJ but I wouldn't throw a nano in a backpack with 2 laptops and a mile of copper spaghetti cables like I will my DJ!

Read the whole article. While it's funny that apple calls the screen defects products of "fat people in tight jeans", the one button mouse thing boosts this into a whole new level of hilarity.

Some of it is from Schillers statement but it has been embellished somewhat, there is a disclaimer at the end of the article. The hockey puck mice were horrible though.....

If it's fake, then I look really dumb about right now.
